Of Such I Dream, My World!

Young Langston Hughes. Of such I dream, my world! This is the second poem by the 20th-century American poet Langston Hughes to appear here. Freedom’s Plow is the first. I’m not sure how this poem escaped my notice until now. It was written in 1926, the year the collection “The Weary Blues” was published. I dream a unified humanity. Little did I know that Langston Hughes was dreaming it too!

Of such I dream, my world!

This poem sings with such hope for a poem written just a few short years after the end of World War I. It was written one year after the death of Rainer Maria Rilke. Rilke wrote a letter in 1917 saying “I’m not living my own life…I feel refuted, abandoned, and above all threatened by a world ready to dissolve entire in such senseless disorder.” Though hope was crushed in World War I, hope springs forth once more in the poem of Langston Hughes.

I dream a world where man
No other man will scorn,
Where love will bless the earth
And peace its paths adorn
I dream a world where all
Will know sweet freedom’s way,
Where greed no longer saps the soul
Nor avarice blights our day.
A world I dream where black or white,
Whatever race you be,
Will share the bounties of the earth
And every man is free,
Where wretchedness will hang its head
And joy, like a pearl,
Attends the needs of all mankind-
Of such I dream, my world!

The New Message from God teaches that in our time, all wars reduce to conflicts over resources. Access to resources and control over resources. Langston Hughes envisioned a world where mankind shares the bounties of the earth. Of such I dream, my world!

Working Through A Limited Self

limited self

When I say I am working through a limited self, what do I mean? Step 45. “Alone I can do nothing” of Steps to Knowledge says, “You work through the individual that is you personally, but you are greater than this. Accept the limitations of a limited self…”

I have shared on Step 45 before in this space, but I would like to elaborate some more today. When reconsidering this step to write this post I was particularly drawn by the idea of a limited self and the potential it has for doing nothing alone.

When I did Step 45 on December 23, 2013, I wrote in my notes: “I am very aware of this concept of accepting my limitations, recognizing them, which gives me humility, and in humility I am in a position to receive greatness. To put it in a different way, I often feel the humility that comes with recognizing my flaws, my disabilities, and in the past it has always been a new starting point to build up from again. And now this Step is teaching me that I can come to a position of strength and even accept and receive greatness in my life from this understanding of my limitations.”

There is not much I can do alone because I am working through a limited self. But in reality I am not alone, for I am part of a greater whole.

This becomes particularly apparent when I am drawn to other comments by Steps to Knowledge students that express other facets of the same idea.

Douglas brought my attention to one such comment: “God doesn’t get rid of our disabilities. He gives us great things to do,” said by someone (maybe Marshall himself he thinks) at Encampment last year.

And another veteran Steps student, Tom C, wrote in his blog on his Steps practice on Step 45 in reference to sharing his journal entries: “This opens me up, which may be a risk, but we need to know others in order that we together can do things. Thoughts can make us feel alone when no one else seems to share them. That has been my experience.”

This sharing brings the idea that alone I can do nothing closer to home.

I also find it very encouraging when I am pondering a particular idea and I am shown more confirmation of the very same idea. For instance, on the day I wrote this post, I opened Secrets of Heaven to page 192 and read:

You cannot find truth alone, for the truth is you are not alone.

Working through a limited self

My own notes for this step go on to say: “I am also aware that when I engage in creative writing and also in my professional work as a translator I receive inspiration and strength from some deep source within me that I now understand to be Knowledge. So indeed I can do nothing alone, from a separate, individual standpoint, only from a position of strength that transcends my limitations and comes from God.”

Indeed I do feel much of what I am able to contribute in the world comes not from me, from my limited self, but from a deeper well of inspiration and plenty, a source that is connected with the All There Is we call God.

Step 3. What do I really know? – Photoquoting

The German painter Anton von Werner (1843-1915) painted this painting “Luther at the Diet of Worms” in 1877. The occasion being portrayed is Martin Luther’s response to the Diet of Worms on April 18, 1521. A diet is a deliberative assembly of the Holy Roman Empire, and Worms is a city in western Germany. While there were a number of different Diets of Worms, the most famous one is this one.

What do I really know?

Martin Luther (1483-1546) was accused of 41 counts of heresy over his writings. These writings addressed a number of theological and church government issues. It is believed that On the Freedom of a Christian is one of those writings.

Luther’s response was 1) Some of his writings were well received even by his enemies, 2) if he failed to rebuke the abuses he observed, he would be a complicit accomplice in them, 3) he admitted a certain undue harshness of tone in his writings (such as calling Pope Leo X the antichrist in 1520), but only agreed to recant in response to proof of his error from Scripture.

Martin Luther’s response to his request to recant was as follows: “Unless I am convicted by Scripture and plain reason — I do not accept the authority of popes and councils, for they have contradicted each other — my conscience is captive to the Word of God. I cannot and will not recant anything, for to go against conscience is neither right nor safe.”

I consider Martin Luther to be a human being, even as we are. What do I really know? On that day in 1521, Martin Luther really knew something. And that knowing reverberates and echoes to this day. 493 years later, the Lutheran World Federation has 144 member church bodies (denominations) in 79 countries, representing 72 million Lutherans. That knowing reverberates and echoes to this day.

Alisa writes:

“I really know nothing,” is what I decided when I did this Step. I put this in clearer perspective in my Step 3 post “What Do I Really Know” when I stated that I don’t know anything for sure.

Imagine my delight when I came across a quote by Vincent Van Gogh, who said, “For my part I know nothing with any certainty, but the sight of the stars makes me dream.”
Vincent Van Gogh

So I chose his famous painting “The Starry Night” for my Step 3 photo quote.

I Will Not Be Afraid Of My Will

The Sermon on the Mount by Jan Brueghel the Elder, 1598. I will not be afraid of my own will.In the final portion of what is now known as the Sermon on the Mount (Matthew 7:21-27), Jesus says something that I didn’t expect him to say. I have read and heard this passage many times, but I’ve never heard a preacher or a commentator fully address my disquietude on the subject.

I will not be afraid of my will

“Not everyone who says to me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ will enter the kingdom of heaven, but only the one who does the will of my Father who is in heaven. Many will say to me on that day, ‘Lord, Lord, did we not prophesy in your name and in your name drive out demons and in your name perform many miracles?’ Then I will tell them plainly, ‘I never knew you. Away from me, you evildoers!’” (Matthew 7:21-23, New International Version)

The last sentence is the one that gets me. I expected Jesus to say “Then I will tell them plainly, ‘You didn’t do the will of my Father. Away from me, you evildoers!'” But instead he says “I never knew you,” as if that was the most terrible indictment he could bring against a human being.

Perhaps when the audience heard the phrase “does the will of my Father,” they imagined the miraculous demonstrations Jesus mentioned in the following sentence. Perhaps Jesus felt a need to disabuse his audience of those imaginings. I don’t claim to be a Bible scholar. I don’t believe you need to be a Bible scholar to see that one of the points of this passage is that Jesus teaches it is the will of his Father to be known by Jesus.

I am sharing this because something in Step 43 “My will is to know God” of Steps to Knowledge said something along these lines, even more succinctly:

“Your will is to know God. Do not be afraid of your will. You are created by God. God’s will is to know you. Your will is to know God. There is no other will. All motivations other than this are born merely of confusion and fear. To know God gives God power and gives you power as well.”

I cry out with the psalmist David, “Search me, O God, and know my heart; test me and know my anxious thoughts.” (Psalm 139:23, New International Version). I cry out with Jesus “Not what I will, but what you will.” (Mark 14:36, New International Version). I cry out “I will to will your will, O God.” I will not be afraid of my will.

Placing Priorities

placing priorities

Placing priorities has become a vital part of my daily life. And one of my top priorities today is blogging at Ascending Knowledge.

One year ago today, I wrote and published my first post as a co-blogger in this space called “I Know Nothing Now.”

I think I can say without any exaggeration that not a single doubt clouded my mind when I first received Douglas’s kind invitation to blog with him. I believe I literally jumped at the chance. I have shared my delight about receiving this invitation before in my New Year’s post called “Sowing the Seeds of My Practice,” but I will repeat some of that delight again now.

The force of friendship

At the time, Douglas said he believed it would be a great way to sow the seeds of my practice in my world and he offered me a spectrum of opportunity.  I could either be a guest for a time period of my choice (a certain number of days, weeks, months) or I could post for as long as I wanted. I went for the second option (as more than a casual observer can no doubt tell) and have since received a promotion, without a raise mind you, to the position of co-editor (I now have license to edit all the posts at Ascending Knowledge at will). So our partnership is growing.

Yes, I speak of our relationship as a partnership, and a partnership it certainly is. But it is more than that. And this has become intuitively obvious to me over the past year. Douglas calls it “attunement,” and I have to agree. I also say, like the frog in Rumi’s poem, that “this is the force of Friendship” at work in the world. As though caught by an invisible thread, I am pulled by the attunement that mysteriously appears between people on the same spiritual path, that “spiritual closeness,” to connect with people on the other side of the planet.

The process unfolds

During this first year at Ascending Knowledge, I have written around 66 posts in English and 56 posts in Russian. My Russian posts are fairly close replicas of my English posts.

When I first began blogging here, my posts were random, inspired mainly by what Douglas happened to be posting on at that time.

Around October, however, I was prompted to begin posting on my Steps to Knowledge practice methodically, beginning at Step One. So that is what I have been doing ever since. To date, I have blogged up to and including Step 44, in both English and Russian.

Writing posts in Russian is rather a challenge, I have to admit. First, my Russian writing skills leave something to be desired, but I persevere and nurture the hope, perhaps vain, that they do indeed make some sense. Second, the translation of Steps to Knowledge into Russian is still in progress, so I am unable to point Russians who might want to practice themselves to a complete Russian version of Steps. I give a link to Steps to Knowledge in English in my posts, encouraged by Marshall’s own words during the first broadcast of the Steps Vigil this year when he said, “And I do want to make one other comment, and that’s the language of Steps to Knowledge. It is so simple, which means it’s so translatable. Even someone with very poor English could read this book.”

A few statistics

I am not as “statistics-savvy” as Douglas, but I understand that as far as visits to Ascending Knowledge from Russia and Russophones go, the statistics have been generally rising over the past year, reaching a total of 621 visits from the Russian-speaking part of the world against a global total of 9,212 for the year. Is this a good percentage? Douglas is encouraged, so perhaps it is.

And to date there have been visits from 60 of the 83 Russian regions and from 94 different cities all over the Russian Federation, ranging from Kamchatka in the Far East to the Republic of Karelia in the northwest on the border with Finland. I have been sharing my Russian posts on a couple of Russian websites and this has been the result.  What does this say? I am not sure, apart from I am providing the link and people are clicking. All I can hope is that some seeds are being sown.

Placing priorities

In real life, I am happy to say that I recently (on June 24) completed Steps for the first time and am currently on the Step 21. Review the second time around. I am blogging on Round Two separately here, “just for the record” as I like to say.

Another New Message student posed an interesting question about this when he asked if blogging has an impact on you when doing the Steps. I have to admit that I construed this at first as asking, does blogging interfere with actually doing the Steps? In other words, does it detract from your practice? I wrote this in response to the inquiry: “I find it very useful, it keeps me motivated and moving along, but I don’t vouch for this working for everyone. I just enjoy blogging  I posted on the NM forum on each Step the first time around, but I thought it might be a bit much to do that the second time. Instead the idea came upon me to chronicle my Steps second time in a separate blog, just for the record.”

Upon further consideration though, I am thinking that “impact” can have both a “negative” and “positive” connotation. Developing the thread of thought I began in my response, I can quite safely say that blogging on my Steps practice has had a very positive impact on the quality of my practice.

I am placing priorities in my life, and top priority goes to practicing Steps to Knowledge and sharing what I am gleaning from it in my blogging efforts.

Here’s to one year and counting!

Раздвинуть облака, чтобы видеть звезды

For English version click here.

Step 2. Knowledge is with me. Where am I? – Photoquoting

Step2-Triathlon-WordPress-FitThe people in this picture are actually trying to get somewhere. They’re trying to get to the end of the swimming portion of a triathlon. But this picture captured my answer to the question of Step 2 “Knowledge is with me. Where am I?” of Steps to Knowledge. I was thrashing and flailing on the turbulent surface of my mind.

Knowledge is with me. Where am I?

It seems to be a good thing to think about the steps in both words and pictures. It seems to be a good thing to put a post with this picture along with the other posts which mention Step 2.

I am currently on the Step 42 Review, the second time through Steps to Knowledge.

I am currently blogging about Step 95, “How can I possibly fulfill myself?” I seem to be on a bit of a dither. I am confronted with the inadequacy of my words to convey the experience. If I write something about Step 95, and someone reads it, without grasping the significant amount of preparation that has taken place in Steps 1 through 94, have I helped?

I have made photoquotes for Step 1 through Step 16, “Beyond my mind is Knowledge,” without doing the Review steps (Steps 7 and 14). I’m managing to keep the photoquotes page current, more or less. I am experiencing a certain flow of enthusiasm regarding photoquotes.

I have only made posts of photoquotes for the first two steps. This may take a while, but I’d like to believe I’ll get around to it.

Knowledge is with me. Where am I? I am a little of the way up the mountain. I am a student. I am a marginally competent student. I am a student who is increasing in competence. I am someone who is doing the work of reclaiming Knowledge. I am someone who is learning to learn without fear, without ambition. If Knowledge possesses a perfect utilization of my nature, then where do I sign up?

Alisa writes:

This picture shows up on many spiritual websites that address purpose, meaning and direction in life, but I do not know who made it. It resonated with me because when I did Step 2, I saw myself standing at the bottom of a stairway, a stairway leading upwards, with something gleaming and beckoning at the top. Knowledge shines like a beacon and I have the urge to reach it. Where am I? I am at the bottom ready to ascend.

Parting The Clouds To See The Stars

I am parting the clouds to see the stars when Step 44. I Wish to Know My Strength of Steps to Knowledge asks me to know my strength and utilize it on my own behalf.

It suggests that the obstacles that prevent me from claiming my strength are vaporous things that cross my mind like clouds. Beyond the clouds of my mind is the great universe of Knowledge. So I am parting the clouds to see the stars beyond. I am to seek my strength and I am to use it to find my strength.

When I reached Step 44 on December 22, 2012, I thought that my strength might lie in writing. I had written a book charting some of the journey that led me to return to Russia in 1990 and felt the urge to go back and do some major revision on it. I was obstructed by clouds of doubt, clouds of unworthiness, clouds of self-deprecation. I wished to release them, to pass through them, parting the clouds to experience something greater beyond. The call to express something (Step 12. My individuality is to express life itself) was the greater something I valued.

I wrote in my notes:

“This Step speaks to me in a very authentic way today. I feel called upon to return to a writing project I began several years ago and refashion it from my new vantage point, after recognizing and claiming my strength and directing it in a manner that truly regenerates me and brings forth my true abilities. Let the clouds of my mind part and dissipate so that I can see the stars beyond and use Knowledge to guide me where I need to go.”

Parting the clouds to see the stars

I remember particularly appreciating Douglas’s reference to the Wizard of Oz in regard to this step on the Free School Forum. And today my attention returns to that story again, to the part where Dorothy is told that she always had the power to go home, only to believe it, she had to learn it for herself.

I have always had more strength than I claimed, only I have been unable to believe it. Now I am parting the clouds to see the stars, to see the strength I do indeed possess. Steps to Knowledge is teaching me how to learn it for myself.

I Am Doing A Great Work And Cannot Come Down

I am doing a great work and cannot come downThe Old Testament book of Nehemiah describes the story of the rebuilding of the walls and gates of Jerusalem some time around 445 BC. The book of Nehemiah mentions that this project faced opposition from the surrounding peoples, Samaritans, Ammonites, Arabs and Philistines. Chapter 6 describes a failed ploy of the opposition.

I am doing a great work and cannot come down

“Now when it was reported to Sanballat, Tobiah, to Geshem the Arab and to the rest of our enemies that I had rebuilt the wall, and that no breach remained in it, although at that time I had not set up the doors in the gates, then Sanballat and Geshem sent a message to me, saying, ‘Come, let us meet together at Chephirim in the plain of Ono.’ But they were planning to harm me. So I sent messengers to them, saying, ‘I am doing a great work and I cannot come down. Why should the work stop while I leave it and come down to you?’ They sent messages to me four times in this manner, and I answered them in the same way.” (Nehemiah 6:1-4, New American Standard Bible)

The bit that is ringing and singing in my soul is the reply of Nehemiah, “I am doing a great work and I cannot come down.” It is what I aspire to say about my life to anyone who wants to engage me in trivial pursuits. I don’t claim to have accomplished anything particularly important in the greater scheme of things. I claim to be a slave of the spirit of the quest for doing what is necessary, what is essential.

Step 33, “I have a mission in my life to fulfill” of Steps to Knowledge tells me I was given a mission before I came to this world, and I will review that mission when I leave. The speech I plan to give at that review is the “I was doing a great work and could not come down” speech. I plan to spend the rest of my life rehearsing that speech.

I am doing a great work and cannot come down. And even when I’m not, I want to be.
