New Message from God students

We talk a lot at Mystery of Ascension about being a student of the New Message from God, part of which is the Steps to Knowledge.

I have been a student at the Free School of the New Message from God for exactly a year now and have to say that if all schools provided their students with such a radiant atmosphere so conducive to learning, the world might be a very different place.

So what is the Free School and who is a student of the New Message?

I will start with some facts and figures.

After being launched in March 2012, The Free School now has 1109 students: 591 students in 50 US states and 518 students in 83 other countries. You can find out more here.

The Free School is not a physical place, but a gathering in cyperspace consisting of a myriad lights scattered all over the globe, with their focal point in Boulder, Colorado. And its students are of all ages, backgrounds, nationalities, creed, and color.

Which brings me to my second question: who is a student of the New Message?

I have pondered this for a while—what does it take for one person to be drawn to this school and another to pass it by? Some may pass it by because they do not even see it, they are looking the other way, or their eyes are still closed. Others see it but come no closer, feeling disturbed, appalled, scared, or repelled. Still others may get as far as door, even step inside, but immediately be filled with doubt and walk away. Then there are the ones who come and stay.

What makes them different? Not a high IQ, not some outstanding talent or ability in a specific field, not any signs of genius, not the possession of some special skill or acumen.  So who are they? What draws them and what makes them stay?

I don’t have a ready answer. I only have the sneaking suspicion that all who attend the Free School have come to the realization that life is not all about themselves, about their personal ambitions, desires and pursuit of happiness, rather they are here to serve and serve from some deeper place within them. And having understood this, they all come with a common passion to receive Knowledge and make their small but specific contribution to this world.

I think I will even go as far as to say that the students of the New Message from God are among those spearheading the planet today.

The Boulder Flood Wasn’t Just Another Flood For Us

The devastating flooding in the Boulder, Colorado area was much more than just another flood for the New Message from God community.

First, a person could stand at the front door of the offices of the New Message from God, and throw a stone into Four-Mile Creek.  On normal days, Four-Mile Creek is a tiny trickle.  But during the Boulder flooding, Four-Mile Creek was a raging, twenty-feet-by-eight-feet torrent.

Everyone in the Boulder New Message community is accounted for, although I’ve heard some reports of property damage.  Everything in the offices were moved to two feet off the floor, but Four-Mile Creek didn’t overflow its banks in the area of the offices.

Second, the Boulder floods didn’t happen at just any time, but shortly after the time of the 2013 Encampment, the annual global New Message gathering. Some attendees were just leaving Boulder as the flooding started.

It is the general opinion in the New Message community that the Boulder flooding was not just another catastrophic flood, but part of a series of events including the recent 500-year flooding in Europe, the 2011 Japanese tsunami, and the Queensland, Australia flooding of 2010-2011.  The New Message from God includes a prediction, a prophecy, that humanity will face a number of wrenching adjustments, including climatic disruptions, in its present and future developments.  These adjustments are described in greater detail in the book The Great Waves of Change (downloadable for free at the link; go ahead, I’ll wait)

The 2013 Boulder flooding wasn’t just another 100-year flood for the New Message from God community.  It was a time where we were confronted by our message’s prophecy.  We will remember the 2013 Boulder flooding as the time the Great Waves of Change came (almost literally) to our front door.

2013 Encampment Press Release

The Denver Post picked up the press release that was sent out to publicize the 2012 Encampment of the New Message from God.  Other attendees wrote accounts of their Encampment experience here and here.  Here is the press release for this year:

Annual “Hajj” held in Colorado for the New Message from God

BOULDER, Colo., Aug. 12, 2013 — On Sept 5th, followers of the religious movement, the New Message from God, will convene in Estes Park, Colorado for their fifth annual five-day gathering.

Based on the revelations of Marshall Vian Summers, the New Message from God spans 9200 pages of text and 820 recorded discourses. Now translated into 16 languages, the New Message from God has spurred the growth of a diverse religious body with members in many countries. The 2013 Encampment will see pilgrims from across North America, Europe and Asia.

The Encampment is a five-day event focused on the revelations and practices that constitute living the New Message from God. Of primary focus are the pillars of being a student of the New Message:

1) Studying the revealed texts and spiritual practices contained in the New Message from God

2) Advocating for a unified world response to climate change, depletion of the Earth’s resources and the oppression of women and the poor

3) Sharing the New Message from God with others

4) Giving to support the emergence of the New Message from God in the world

5) Honoring Marshall Vian Summers as God’s Messenger

The New Message from God began in 1983 when Summers had a mysterious and shocking encounter in which his mind and voice were “overtaken by an Angelic presence” who told him to “record”. His followers claim that what emerged from his voice thereafter were the words of a new testament containing an unprecedented revelation for humanity.

Just as Muslims consider Muhammad to be the messenger from God, students of the New Message consider Marshall Vian Summers the messenger through which God is now speaking again. For them, the annual Encampment is the equivalent of the Islamic Hajj, except that at this historic pilgrimage God’s Messenger will actually be present.

Summers claims his revelations are not based on Christian or Muslim traditions; however, the New Message from God states that Moses, Buddha, Jesus and Muhammad were all messengers and that approximately once every millennium, God sends a message and a messenger to deliver something new and unprecedented to the human family.
