Let’s Get To Business, Shall We?

Let's get to business, shall we? These men will. Well, after lunch, that is.

Let’s get to business, shall we?  Steps to Knowledge does.  Steps to Knowledge, as early as Step 6, “I have a true foundation in the world,” describes the world as a place to which we have come.  The world isn’t merely the scene of a biological accident.  The world isn’t just a karmic prison which we don’t escape until we have paid the last penny.  I wrote about this in more detail here.

But why have we come to the world?  In Step 18, “Today I feel the truth arising within myself,” we are told we have come into the world to find certain individuals.  In Step 34, “I am a beginning student of Knowledge,” we are told there are specific things we have come to do.  I consider it most pertinent that that statement comes in the step directly after Step 33, “I have a mission in my life to fulfill.” In Step 55, “I will accept the world as it is,” we are told we have come to the world to serve.  Step 65, “I have come to work in the world,” adds another clue to the mystery of why we have come to the world.  Step 65 is also the first step to use the phrase “I have come” in the step itself.

Let’s get to business, shall we?

Step 65 is the first step since Step 33 to directly address the idea that there is a mission to fulfill, that there is work to do in the world.  It is as if Steps to Knowledge sowed a seed in me in Step 33, and came back to water it in Step 65.  Are we told what the mission is, what the work is?  No.  We are only told what it is not.

“Your work is greater than your current employment. Your work is greater than what you are currently attempting to do with people and for people. Your work is greater than what you are attempting to do for yourself. Understand that you do not know what your work is. That will be revealed to you and it will evolve for you, but understand today that you have come to the world to work.”

I have a thought that if I had a direct experience of my work which I came to the world to do, at the time I did Step 65, then I would be terrified out of my senses.  I would run screaming from wherever I was, knowing full well that there was no place to run screaming to.

My Mission May Be Simpler Than I Think

When Steps to Knowledge talks about having a mission to fulfill, it is difficult not to feel daunted. However, Step 33 asks me only to dwell upon the idea and not to draw any conclusions. It also assures me that as I become stronger in Knowledge, my activities will be adjusted.

When I did this Step I felt a new contentment and willingness to just take life as it comes, confident that as I reclaim Knowledge, I will be led in the right direction. I am not faced with a mission impossible, but with a world of possibilities.

So today, as I was turning the page of my calendar from August to September, I was brought up short by what I read there.

Just let me explain first that I never buy my own calendars, I receive them from my mother. And this particular calendar she gave to me in June while I was visiting her with the apology that maybe it was a bit late since the year was half over and perhaps I did not want it. I assured her that I did and hung it on my wall when I got home, without giving it much closer attention, I just like to know the date and day of the week sometimes.

And this is what I read:

It’s the way you think. That’s your purpose.
It’s never been about what work you choose, what gifts you develop, or what niche you fill—let these be for your pleasure.
Think as only you can think, which will lead to feelings that only you can feel, from which connections will be made, lives will be changed, and worlds will come tumbling into existence. This is why you’re here.

Now how about that?

Could I Have A Mission In My Life To Fulfill?

Could I have a mission in my life to fulfill?

Isn’t just surviving a noble fight?

Could I have a mission in my life to fulfill?

Doesn’t everything that should be done, and everything that should be avoided, reduce to “women and children first,” species survival?

Could I have a mission in my life to fulfill?

Just because the “heroes of faith” mentioned in Hebrews 11 (Abraham, Moses, Joshua, David, etc.) had a mission, does it necessarily follow that I have a mission?  Weren’t there countless people who lived during the days of these exemplary individuals, whose mission, if they had one, was unrecorded?

Could I have a mission in my life to fulfill?

Could my mission be where my deep gladness and world’s deep hunger meet?  (And should that phrase be banned from commencement speeches?)

Sovereign LORD, you alone know.

Step 33 “I have a mission in my life to fulfill” is the first appearance of the word “mission” in Steps to Knowledge.  The question “Could I have a mission in my life to fulfill?” is answered with an emphatic, full-throated “Yes!”  Not only do I have a mission, but I’ve had a mission all my life.  I had a mission before I was born, and that mission will be reviewed after I die.

I have had seasons in life where I believed I had a mission in life to fulfill.  I have also had seasons in life where I was fully persuaded that if I had a mission in life to fulfill, I had failed at it.  So I came to this step with a certain mixture of hope and regret.  As I did the practice of dwelling on the idea that I had a great mission in life, I got the idea that if I really did have a great mission in life, I would organize my life, my circumstances, my practices, my relationships, around the fulfillment of that mission.
