Step 4. I Want What I Think I Know is a real humdinger to be sure. It basically implies that the reality I have been building all this while is as flimsy as a house of cards that will fall at the first flick of a finger or puff of wind. Not only does what I think I know have no basis in reality, wanting it just shows I am headed up the wrong creek and will soon be left without a paddle. The Step kindly follows the statement “When you realize [the things you think you know] are based primarily upon your assumptions, you will realize how weak is your foundation in the world” with “Understanding this may be upsetting and disconcerting.” Indeed!

Speaking for myself, however, I am happy to report that I did not find this realization to be upsetting or disconcerting.  I am happy to report that I was ready to accept that the things I think I know, that is, my assumptions, have very little in common with reality and rest on a weak foundation. I will even go as far as to say that I had reached this conclusion earlier. So when confronted with the realization that my assumptions have not been based upon my experience and are a very flimsy foundation on which to build my life, my first thought was “no surprise there.”

My true foundation is more than I think I know

Instead of giving up in despair, though, I am arming myself with the Step’s concluding statement. It tells me that this realization is “absolutely essential for [me] to give [me] the impetus and the desire to discover [my] true foundation in the world.”

See, this is the beauty of Steps, although they first bring my attention to the flaws in my perception, they go on to inspire me to rectify these flaws and even imply that this is something within my capability. After realizing I have a weak foundation in the world I am given the impetus and desire to discover my true foundation.

Now how superb is that?
