There Is A Part Of Me That Knows No Fear

Cosmic brilliance. There is a part of me that knows no fear
Step 41 of Steps to Knowledge, “I am not afraid of the power of God.”

In the 2018 Encampment of the New Message from God, we contemplated an increasingly difficult world. A world of diminishing resources, affected climate, environmental degradation, and extraterrestrial intervention. How shall we respond to such a world? The answer we contemplated was “moving with Knowledge.” Knowledge is described in a number of ways in the New Message from God. It is called the deeper spiritual intelligence that God has placed within each person. It is called a person’s True Self, a Self that is not apart from life. It is called the love of God. It is something we seek to approach and follow.

Step 51 of Steps to Knowledge, “Let me recognize my fears so that I may see the truth beyond them.”

In the book “Wisdom from the Greater Community, Volume II,” the following is said about Knowledge.

“This question of honesty would seem to be hopelessly complex and difficult if it were not for the presence of Knowledge within you, for Knowledge is always honest, regardless of what it encounters. Knowledge is unafraid of anything. There is nothing in the world that can harm Knowledge. Therefore, the more you are allied with Knowledge, the more fearless you will become, the more secure you will become, the greater the sense of self and identity you will have, and the greater the sense of direction and relationship you will possess. This gives you the foundation upon which to expand your range of honesty and to receive its rewards in new and unexpected ways.”

Approaching Knowledge requires effort

There is a part of me that knows no fear. But fear is a part of the human experience. It takes some work to approach this fearless Knowledge. In the 365 steps of the book Steps to Knowledge, there are 11 steps at various intervals that address the subject of fear.

Step 41 – I am not afraid of the power of God.
Step 51 – Let me recognize my fears so that I may see the truth beyond them.
Step 87 – I will not be afraid of what I know.
Step 128 – My Teachers are with me. I need not fear.
Step 151 – I will not use fear to support my judgments.
Step 152 – I will not follow fear within the world.
Step 156 – I will not be concerned about myself today.
Step 162 – I will not be afraid today.
Step 226 – Knowledge is with me. I will not be afraid.
Step 301 – I will not lose myself in anxiety today.
Step 304 – I will not be a student of fear today.

How shall we respond?

I can imagine people reading this and thinking “Why don’t the students of this teaching become scientists and engineers? They could analyze and mitigate the effects of the changes they believe are coming.” Who knows, such a thing may happen in the future. I believe we are becoming more literate regarding various solutions. But it’s hard to think clearly and productively if one is consumed with fear. There is a part of me that knows no fear. I hope and work to follow that part of me.

I Strive To Scratch The Itches Of A Ghost

There is something I find curious about Step 95, “How can I possibly fulfill myself?” of Steps to Knowledge. The word “possibly” is used a total of five times before Step 95, and the context is usually to cut off hope of something. For example, in Step 87, “I will not be afraid of what I know,” I am told that my personal mind cannot possibly understand my greater purpose. This is the first time the word “possibly” appears in the step itself. Steps to Knowledge frequently uses rhetorical questions, but this is the first time that the step is in the form of a rhetorical question. It is as if Steps to Knowledge is spending some of the capital it has accumulated with me by reducing my suffering in previous steps. Steps to Knowledge is questioning something that it didn’t occur to me to question, claiming that I strive to scratch the itches of a ghost.

I strive to scratch the itches of a ghost

When Steps to Knowledge says that Knowledge is my True Self in Step 10, “What is Knowledge?”, it’s not claiming that my individuality, my body and personality is a false self. Rather, it is claiming that my individuality is an incomplete self, a secondary self, a vehicle for my true self. If this is true, then the efforts I make to fulfill myself are equivalent to making efforts to fulfill a suit I wear, or a house I live in, or a car I drive.

Someone is reading this and thinking “But Douglas, that’s, that’s…” Crazy? We prefer the word “confused.” This state of affairs is the consequence of living in a world where people believe what they want to believe. This state of affairs is the consequence of living in a world where people want to be separate to be unique. I strive to scratch the itches of a ghost.

Will It Hurt To Know?

Will it hurt to know? It definitely hurts to expect my personal mind to know.Any student who has reached Step 87, “I will not be afraid of what I know” of Steps to Knowledge, might be entertaining the thought “Easy for you to say, pal!” If Knowledge really is the great mystery of my life, then what? If I’m not wondering “Will it hurt to know?” then I don’t believe I’m really paying attention. What if Knowledge tells me to get into a different line of work, or move to a different city? Even studying Steps to Knowledge has a certain disruptive influence by now, sucking some of the poison of resentment and regret out of my soul.

Will it hurt to know?

Therefore, it seems necessary to take a deep, cleansing breath and hitch up my drawers before advancing further. Step 87 seems to “know” this, and addresses this.

“You may bear great anger and distrust towards yourself, but this is not directed at Knowledge. This is directed at your personal mind, which cannot possibly understand your greater purpose. It cannot possibly answer your greatest questions or provide certainty, purpose, meaning and direction in your life.”

As both a child and a parent, I have taken much pleasure in playing the board game Monopoly. As a child, I took a certain pleasure in the game tokens, like the Scottish Terrier or Scottie Dog pictured above. As I contemplated this step, a thought came to me. The thought was that expecting my personal mind to understand my greater purpose, was equivalent to asking the Scottie Dog game token whether I should invest in dirt-cheap Baltic Avenue or expensive Boardwalk. Expecting my personal mind to answer my greatest questions, or to provide certainty, purpose, meaning and direction in my life, seemed like giving my personal mind a task beyond its design specifications.

I need the Scottie Dog (my individuality) to play the game, and the Scottie Dog needs something greater than itself (like Knowledge) to provide purpose, meaning and direction as to how the game is played. Will it hurt to know? All I know at this point is that it definitely hurts to expect my personal mind to understand my greater purpose. Maybe I should stop doing that.
