How Shall I Develop Myself?

resolutions How shall I develop myselfI am persuaded that you are needed here. And by “here” I mean “in this world.” Therefore, it is my sincere hope that you will cleanse and develop yourself, because you are important. Therefore, I can get behind the idea of New Year’s Resolutions (NYRs) to a certain extent. I would also like to offer some adjustments to the existing custom.

How shall I develop myself?

How shall I develop myself? Ashleigh Brilliant wrote “At any moment I could start being a better person…But which moment should I choose?” The current custom of NYRs involves identifying a problem, and then not doing anything about it until January 1. Therefore, the earlier in December one’s NYRs are made, the more skeptical I am regarding them. The earlier in December one’s NYRs are made, the more disempowering they are, as they take you away from the idea that you could do something right now.

How shall I develop myself? I can generally get behind the idea of both spoken and written NYRs. I can generally get behind the idea of an NYR being in the form of an affirmation. But many spoken and written resolutions fail. Many affirmations fail. Why is that the case? I consider one reason to be the lack of unity on the inside of a person. Many people resolve to do something, but don’t envision themselves doing the thing they resolved. For example, Arnold Schwarzenegger attributed his success as a bodybuilder not only to his efforts in the gym, but to his efforts in visualizing himself practicing, visualizing his muscles growing, visualizing his being acclaimed as a champion. Therefore, I consider any NYRs that do not include visualizations of both taking the actions, and getting the results of those actions, to be disempowering and non-well-formed.

How shall I develop myself? Many NYRs are reasonably well-formed, and have a certain amount of inner visualization behind them, but still fail. Why is that the case? I consider one reason to be the lack of practice, the lack of “putting feet to your prayers.” Some people are practicing things that are guaranteed to result in something other than their NYR. Therefore, I consider any NYRs that do not include plans for practices that will result in those things happening to be non-well-formed and disempowering.

How shall I develop myself? At this point, I can imagine someone thinking “So what is your 2015 NYR, Mr. Smartybritches?” It is to complete the study of Steps to Knowledge for the second time. Steps to Knowledge is the book of spiritual practice of the New Message from God. It has 365 steps to follow. I took about 4 years to do Steps to Knowledge the first time. I started again in April of 2014. I am currently on Step 85, “I find happiness in small things today.”. I was on Step 321, “The world is awaiting my contribution”. I therefore did 128 steps in 2014. I envision, resolve and plan to do more in the coming year.

How shall I develop myself? I have a plan to reach the goal. If I work my plan, I will end up closer to my goal than I will if I do nothing. Who knows, it might even take me all the way.

“I Try To Help People Up The Mountain”

leadership-mountain-climbing I try to help people up the mountainFrom time to time, I have mentioned one of my children, going under the name “Child”. Child and I have had a running joke for some time now:

Me: Is there anything you would like me to ask Marshall Vian Summers on your behalf when I go to the 2014 Encampment?
Child: How was your day?
Me: Well, even Messengers need someone to ask them how their day was.

I try to help people up the mountain

It has taken a while, but Child came up with what I consider to be an excellent question. This conversation took place not too long before the 2014 Encampment.

Me: I’ll be at Encampment soon. Is there anything you would like me to ask Marshall on your behalf?
Child: Does Marshall consider himself responsible for the happiness of his students, the students of his teachings?
Me: Would you like me to offer an opinion as to what he might say, or just let the question sit until then?
Child: I’m willing to hear your opinion.
Me: I believe he would say “No.” I believe he would consider students of the New Message to be responsible for their own happiness.
Child: Well, he seems to suggest that happiness isn’t an end in itself.
Me: I agree. I would say he focuses more on purpose than on happiness.
Child: Well, then, does Marshall consider himself responsible for the success of his students?
Me: You mean their success by worldly standards, or their success as students of the New Message?
Child: As students of the New Message.
Me: Again, I believe he would say “No.” I remember a webcast where Marshall said something to the effect of “I am doing something important.” It reminded me of Nehemiah, who said “I am doing a great work and cannot come down.”
Child: Oh.

Child and I have had a conversation about Step 85, “I find happiness in small things today” of Steps to Knowledge. Child seemed to be satisfied with my response. But I am sharing this to share that during the Encampment, I became less satisfied with my answers to Child’s questions. I became less satisfied because during the Encampment, Marshall displayed a certain solicitude toward the people there. On the third day, I wrote in my journal that Marshall remarked, “I try to help people up the mountain.” On the fourth day, Marshall said, “This community is precious to me. What brings it together is precious to me. What holds it together is precious to me.” I therefore wrote a note to Marshall wondering if I had really described the full picture in my answer to Child’s questions.

As people were leaving on the final day, Marshall approached me and answered my question. He said, “I don’t guarantee happiness, but I do help people find the way.” I therefore consider the full picture to be more nuanced than my answers to Child. While Marshall doesn’t feel responsible for the success of New Message respondents, he certainly isn’t indifferent.

I am here to tell you that if you are climbing the mountain of purpose, the mountain of meaning, the mountain of your mission in life, then you have a friend in Marshall Vian Summers, who said, “I try to help people up the mountain.”

What Am I Trying To Prove?

Cirque Mechanics Birdhouse Factory. What am I trying to proveStep 91 of Steps to Knowledge is a review of the steps from Step 85 “I find happiness in small things today” to Step 90 “Today I will make no assumptions.”

What am I trying to prove?

During this series of steps, I noticed that Step 88, “My Higher Self is not an individual” is the only step in Steps to Knowledge which uses the phrase “Higher Self.” The Step 91 Review also contains a word which appears only once in Steps to Knowledge. That word is “showmanship.”

“Learn how to learn. Learn about the process of learning. Do not use learning as a form of showmanship. Do not use learning to try to prove your worth to yourself. You cannot prove your worth. It is beyond your efforts to prove it. Your worth will demonstrate itself when you allow it, which you are now learning to do.”

What am I trying to prove? In earlier steps, students have been challenged to develop listening without preference and seeing without preference. Can I learn without preference? Can I learn without enlisting my learning as a foot soldier in my quest for your appreciation? I surmise that the rebuke of showmanship is giving an indirect reminder of the conversation about worth started in Step 24, “I am worthy of God’s love.”

Here is the word cloud for steps 85 through 90:

Steps To Knowledge Steps 85-90 Word Cloud. What am I trying to proveOn further review, I believe there are better uses of my time than separating out the words in the word cloud so that they can be remixed the way I like.

What am I trying to prove? Who am I trying to prove it to? Can I justify your love? Should I justify your love? Would it be progress to just abandon the whole enterprise?

Glory Be To God For Small Things

Glory be to God for small things. I find happiness in small things today. The poet Gerald Manley Hopkins wrote “Glory be to God for dappled things.” As someone with freckles, I consider myself included in his song of praise. As I contemplate Step 85 of Steps to Knowledge “I find happiness in small things today,” I say “Glory be to God for small things.”

Glory be to God for small things

The word happiness is mentioned more times in this Step than in all the previous 84 Steps put together. Even though happiness hasn’t been addressed to a great extent by Steps to Knowledge so far, happiness is a result of some of the things Steps has been stressing. Things like being still, as taught by Step 8 “Today I will be still.” Things like observing more and judging less, as taught by Step 29 “I will observe myself today to learn of Knowledge.” Things like engaging with my mission in life, as taught by Step 33 “I have a mission in my life to fulfill.” Things like unwinding my emotional investment in my judgments, as taught by Step 55 “I will accept the world as it is.”

The Step said that small things can carry great messages if you are attentive to them. I don’t remember receiving any particular great messages from small things when I did this Step. I do recall slowly backing away from judging small things as insignificant or unimportant because they are small.

On further review, perhaps my individuality, my body and personality, is a small thing. Even though my individuality is to express life itself (Step 12). it will be gone after a while. Therefore, as I contemplate Step 85, as I contemplate finding happiness in small things, I rephrase myself, and say “Glory be to God for small things. Like me.”
