There Is A Wise Perception Of The Present

There is a wise perception of the present

Cherries are on sale at my local grocer. In my mind, cherries are connected with one of the tales in the book Tales of the Dervishes by Idries Shah. I have mentioned on numerous occasions that there is a great sympathetic vibration between these dervish tales and the teachings of the New Message from God. It is occurring to me to demonstrate this by commenting on this dervish tale as it proceeds.

There is a wise perception of the present

This tale is attributed to Sufi Abdul-Hamid Khan of Qandahar, who died in 1962. He was the Master of the Afghan Mint, a man with one foot in the dervish world and the other in the world of modern technology. This tale is called “Valuable – and Worthless.” I will put my commentary in brackets.

A certain king one day called a counselor to him and said “The strength of real thinking depends upon the examination of alternatives. Tell me which alternative is better: to increase the knowledge of my people or give them more to eat. In either case they will benefit.”

The Sufi said “Majesty, there is no point in giving knowledge to those who cannot receive it, any more than there is point to giving food to those who cannot understand your motives. Therefore it is not correct to assume that ‘in either case they will benefit.’ If they cannot digest the food, or if they think you give it to them as a bribe, or that they can get more – you have failed. If they cannot see that they are being given knowledge, or whether it is knowledge or not, or even why you are giving it to them, they will not benefit. Therefore the question must be taken by degrees. The first degree is the consideration: ‘The most valuable person is worthless and the most worthless person is valuable.'”

There is a wise perception of the present

[We have now learned that the counselor is a Sufi, a dervish. I consider the knowledge being spoken of here to be knowledge in the ordinary sense; data, information, education. But the Knowledge spoken of by the New Message from God also requires skill and desire to be attained. The deeper spiritual intelligence that God has placed in every person is indifferent to satisfying idle curiosity.]

“Demonstrate this truth to me, for I cannot understand it,” said the king.

The Sufi then called the chief dervish of Afghanistan, and he came to the court. “If you had your way, what would you have someone in Kabul do?” he asked.

There is a wise perception of the present

[We now know this tale is set in Kabul, Afghanistan. I believe that the Sufi is responding to a royal command for a demonstration. I believe that the Sufi is responding to a sincere request to learn. As there are monastic orders, there are dervish orders. As monastic orders have leaders, dervish orders have leaders.]

“It so happens that there is a man near such-and-such a place who, if he knew it, could by giving a pound of cherries to a certain necessitous man, gain a fortune for himself and also great advancement for the whole country and progress for the Path,” said the chief dervish, who knew of the inner correspondence of things.

[I imagine the king thought to himself, “This is the very thing I was asking about in the first place, the benefit of my people!” I consider “the Path” to refer to the dervish path and its participants. I make no claim regarding the inner correspondence of things. But one of the outward manifestations of the Knowledge I seek to reclaim is wise perception in the present and in the future.]

The king was excited, for Sufis generally do not discourse upon such things. “Call him here and we will have it done!” he cried. The others silenced him with a gesture. “No,” said the first Sufi, “this cannot work unless it is done voluntarily.”

In disguise, in order not to influence the man’s choice, the three of them went straight to the Kabul bazaar. Divested of his turban and robe, the chief Sufi looked very much like any ordinary man. “I will take the part of the exciting cause,” he whispered, as the group stood looking at the fruit. He approached the greengrocer and wished him good day. Then he said “I know a poor man. Will you give him a pound of cherries, as a charity?” The greengrocer bellowed with laughter. “Well, I have heard some tricks, but this is the first time that someone who wanted cherries has stooped to ask me as if it were for charity!”

[So now we know that the man who could have given the cherries was a greengrocer, and the cherries were part of his inventory. I imagine the king being crushed on the inside as a golden opportunity was lost forever.]

“You see what I mean?” the first Sufi asked the king. “The most valuable man we have has just made the most valuable suggestion, and the event has proved that he is worthless to the man to whom he speaks.”

[There is a wise perception of the present. Step 232 of the 365 steps in Steps to Knowledge is “My calling in life requires the development of others.” I might not make my rendezvous with others. They might not make their rendezvous with me. But I have to work on being ready.]

“But what about ‘the most worthless person’ being valuable?” asked the king.

The two dervishes beckoned him to follow them.

As they were about to cross the Kabul River, the two dervishes suddenly seized the king and threw him into the water. He could not swim.

As he felt himself about to drown, Kaka Divana, whose name means Insane Uncle – a well-known pauper and lunatic who roamed the streets, jumped in and brought him safely to the bank. Various other, more solid, citizens had seen him in the water, but none moved.

[I am honored with others are strong. When others fail, I am reminded of the need for Knowledge. Today’s hero can be tomorrow’s failure. Today’s failure can be tomorrow’s hero.]

When the king was somewhat restored, the two dervishes intoned together: “The most worthless person is valuable!”

[There is a wise perception of the present. Don’t ask me how the dervishes knew that Kaka Divana would save the king. Don’t ask me why the king didn’t honor and enrich Kaka Divana for saving his life. Don’t ask me why the king didn’t have the dervishes executed. I think the answer to these things is “Elaborating on this would disrupt the arc of the story.”]

So the king went back to his old, traditional method of giving whatever he could – whether education or help of any kind – to those to whom it was decided from time to time were the most worthy recipients of such aid.

[There is a wise perception of the present. The punch line of the story is “The valuable advice of the dervishes proved to be worthless to the king, as it made no change in his behavior.” I desire for the wisdom of the wise to be valuable to me.]

The Most Natural Form of Expression

most natural form of expression

“How can there not be a way for Knowledge to express itself when it is the most natural form of expression?” is one of the questions asked at the beginning of Step 37. There is a way to Knowledge of Steps to Knowledge.

After the questions, the Step states in no uncertain terms: “There is a way to Knowledge.” And goes on to elaborate, “It requires skill and desire.”

I wrote in my notes that for me desire is the key, I want to find the way to Knowledge, it is the driving force behind my being. And I add today that it is the most natural form of expression. What do I mean by that? I mean that as I continue taking Steps to Knowledge, I feel this increasing comfort and ease, I feel things falling into place, I feel this growing sense that I am exactly where I need to be, doing exactly what I need to be doing. So now I can confirm that finding the way to Knowledge is the most natural form of expression.

The most natural form of expression

I hasten to add though that on the day I did this Step (December 14, 2012), I was baulking and struggling and thinking, “I do not need to do that!”

This was when, instead of entering stillness and engaging in deep meditation during the two practice periods, the Step asked me to take a piece of paper and write down all the ways to get to Knowledge, exhausting all the possibilities I could think of. I was very resistant to this suggestion. I did not want to be writing things down. Not that I have anything against writing things down, it is something I do quite regularly, I just did not want to be doing it on command, and my mind was a blank anyway. However, I decided I should not be so faint-hearted, I kept coming back to the Step, rereading it, and finally took up my pen. And once I started, I couldn’t stop, the words kept flowing onto the page.

This is what I wrote:

Ways to gain access to Knowledge – listening to my inner voice, heeding my intuition, my gut feeling, being aware of how I feel after making certain choices or decisions – do I feel peace and contentment, or is something bothering me still, does something feel not quite right? Being aware of how I feel in general, keeping tabs on my reactions, emotions, feelings, consciously keeping my eyes open, being attentive to what is going on, analyzing my feelings, reactions. Having the desire to know the truth, seeking knowledge, gaining insight into myself and my relationships. Paying attention to what other people say, keeping my mind alert to heed messages that come my way, be it in something I read, correspondence with family and friends, some thought or idea that pops into my head, probing and feeling for what feels right, asking to be shown the truth, not pushing things, not expecting instant solutions, being aware that some of my choices are not based on Knowledge and the Truth and need to be adjusted without regret or sorrow. Always seeking, always asking, always desiring to know the Truth.

And something clicked.

Now, for me, this is the most natural form of expression.

Различать грибы от поганок, или где правда и где ложь

For English version click here.

Distinguishing The Mushrooms From The Toadstools

I was out in the forest gathering mushrooms yesterday and found myself taking immense satisfaction in how adept I now am at distinguishing the true mushrooms from the false. And it’s about time, I’ve only been doing this for twenty-odd years!
Step 37. There Is A Way To Knowledge says, “There is a way to Knowledge. It requires skill and desire. Both will take time to develop. You must learn to value the true and not to value the false, and it takes time to learn to separate the two and to recognize them.”

I could not help but compare this to my mushroom-picking experience. Distinguishing mushrooms from toadstools can be difficult, both look so alike, toadstools often being more colorful and attractive than genuine edible mushrooms, so how can you tell them apart? Separating the true from the false also poses a dilemma, how do you know which is right?

Distinguishing mushrooms from toadstools frequently requires close examination, although I have also found that I can now spot a good mushroom from a distance. I take almost pride in the fact that I have the skill and desire, and that I have had the time to develop these attributes. Over time, I have learned to separate the two (the true mushrooms from the false toadstools) and recognize them.

I am applying this to my Steps journey and taking comfort in the fact that with diligence and perseverance I will find the way to Knowledge, the epitome of the Truth. I will learn to value the true and not to value the false. At this point, I am reiterating to myself, based on my mushroom-picking experience, that this requires time and practice, the main emphasis being on practice.

Can I Find The Way To The Power Of God?

This is the sixth post in a series of seven posts regarding Step 49 of Steps to Knowledge.  In Step 49, I’ve been told to review my practice and experience of the first 48 Steps.  I am sharing what I wrote when I actually did the Step 49 review, and adding commentary as needed.

Step 36 – My life is a mystery to explore – “I remember thinking the phrase ‘going spelunking in my soul.'” I waited from early 2011 to June 2013 to write that phrase in a blog post.  Part of this step was taking the focus off of life as a result to be judged.

Step 37 – There is a way to Knowledge – “I wrote down this Step in this book,  I seem to think that I need to get high to get to Knowledge.” I wrote down 23 different practices, some of which are about development of character, some of which are about alteration of consciousness.

Step 38 – God knows the way to Knowledge – “I did the Step.  Sometime around this day I got there were Christians who found the way to Knowledge, like Joan of Arc.”  I’ve written two posts about Joan of Arc so far.  I will probably write more in the future.

Step 39 – The power of God is with me – “I did the step, recalling the hymn ‘Immortal, Invisible, God Only Wise.'”  This Christian hymn, written in 1876 to a Welsh melody, talks about God dwelling in inaccessible light.  It talks about God being “unresting, unhasting, and silent as light.”  This hymn had a similar vibration to me as the bit in the next step about the great stillness of God.

Step 40 – Today I will feel the power of God – “I commented on this Step.”  The post about tomato aspic is the commentary I wrote down.

Step 41 – I am not afraid of the power of God – “I commented on this Step.”  In that commentary, among other things, I wrote “The separation is insane, and to maintain it, I must spin a hurtful insane mud world around myself.”  Spinning a mud world around myself is a line from a Robert Bly translation of a Kabir poem.

Step 42 – Review – “I commented on this review.”  In that commentary, I wrote “Another thing I haven’t written down until now is that I’m very briefly scanning through the Steps I’ve done so far, in getting to the Step I’m going to do on a particular day.  That seems to help.”

St. Joan of Arc and Knowledge

During the time I studied step 37 of Steps to Knowledge (“There is a way to Knowledge”) and step 38 (“God knows the way to Knowledge”), I entertained some thoughts as working hypotheses: 1) There have been Christians from time to time who have reached Knowledge, the great mystery of a person’s life, their True Self which is not apart from life, 2) those who did so considered their Teachers as saints and angels, and 3) St. Joan of Arc is an instance of one of those individuals.

The story of St. Joan of Arc is told in many places, and has touched the hearts of many people.  But there are certain aspects of particular interest to me. It has an instance of inexplicable knowing (Joan asking for the sword her voices told her was buried behind the altar at the church of St. Catherine).  It has an instance of someone declaring the mission in their life (Joan declaring as she embarked on her mission “I am not afraid, for God is with me.  I was born for this!”)  I realize someone is going to read this and think “Well, maybe France deserved to be divided and subjugated by foreign powers.”  I consider that a conversation for another time.

No one remembers Bishop Pierre Cauchon, the leader of the ecclesiastical kangaroo court which sentenced Joan to death.  No one remembers the person who lit the flames.  I believe that Joan would be pleased at the long-lasting peace between England and France, the Entente Cordiale of 1904.  I believe Joan would be pleased to see a unified France.  One day there will be a saint of whom someone will say “I believe St. So-and-so would be pleased to see a unified world.”

Better Yet, There Is A Way To Knowledge For Me

Step 38 of Steps to Knowledge “God knows the way to Knowledge” inspired a similar response in me to the one inspired by step 37 “There is a way to Knowledge.” God had darn well better know the way to Knowledge!  But step 38 added something in which I took comfort; the idea that other people had found and taken a successful way to Knowledge for them.

The Kabir poem “Music” gives the idea that there are people who undertake certain sets of practices because someone else did in some time and some place, and were successful. Are they engaging in something that is necessary, but not sufficient, or is the whole enterprise doomed from the beginning because they are imitating someone else instead of exploring the mystery of their own life?

Someone reading this just thought “Well, what about atheists?  Are they just out of luck with this Knowledge thing?”  Atheists can experience things as self-evident, in a way that inspires consistent action.

Thinking about step 38 encourages me to think that one inner meaning of step 37 is “There is a way to Knowledge for me.”  Thinking about step 38 encourages me to think that one inner meaning of step 38 is “God knows the way to Knowledge for me (and He’s not hiding it from me, either.)”

What Could The Way To Knowledge Be Like?

Since the name of the book is Steps to Knowledge, when I look at step 37 “There is a way to Knowledge,” I think to myself “There had darn well better be!”  It should be noted that Steps to Knowledge does not assert that it is the only way to Knowledge.

“There is a way to Knowledge. It requires skill and desire. Both will take time to develop. You must learn to value the true and not to value the false, and it takes time to learn to separate the two and to recognize them. It takes time to learn that the false does not satisfy you and that the true does satisfy you. This must be learned through trial and error and through contrast. As you approach Knowledge, your life becomes more full, more certain and more direct. As you go away from it, you reenter confusion, frustration and anger.”

Many voices claim to be that of my true self.  Are any of them right?  The practice for this step is to contemplate ways to get to Knowledge.  I wrote down about a page worth of possibilities when I did this step.  I would like to believe that some of the things I wrote down worked for someone at some time, but I don’t claim to know this.  How am I to attain to the mystery of my life?
