Sowing The Seeds Of My Practice

sowing-seedsI am sowing the seeds of my practice in my world and moving onward and upward toward the light. This is the reason I am sharing my practice of Steps to Knowledge here at Mystery of Ascension.

I began my practice at the beginning of November 2012, and by the beginning of 2013, I was doing the Step 49 Review.  At the beginning of 2014, I have reached the Step 238 Review. I am viewing this as a serious accomplishment.

I am pleased with my Steps practice during the past year. Although it is taking longer than a year to complete the entire study program and I am not doing one step a day, I feel I have adhered to the recommendations given in the Introduction to Steps to Knowledge

“Steps to Knowledge is a complete program of study. Each step takes you higher and closer to your self-discovery. Therefore, plan to go the whole way. If you don’t stop, you will advance.”

I plan to go the whole way, I am not stopping, and I can even say I am advancing.

The Introduction goes on to say:

If you miss a day, simply return to practice. Do not condemn yourself (or the program). You need only continue in Steps to receive its full benefit.

I am continuing in Steps and I feel as though I am reaping the fruits it offers, receiving its full benefit. My life is in harmony, I have meaningful and happy relationships with the other people in my life, my physical, mental, and spiritual needs are being met, I awaken each day raring to go.

And I am:

Sowing the Seeds of My Practice

In February 2013, I found Mystery of Ascension. I do not precisely recall now how I found it, let’s just say the circumstances are mysterious. But find it I did, and it was like coming home. I read every post and then I avidly awaited each new update, finding so much that resonated with me in each and every post.

In July 2013, I was delighted to accept Douglas’s invitation to become a guest blogger at Mystery of Ascension. He said he believed it would be a great way to sow the seeds of my practice in my world and he offered me a spectrum of opportunity.  I could either be a guest for a time period of my choice (a certain number of days, weeks, months) or I could post and edit for as long as I wanted.

I have chosen the second option. Sharing and sowing the seeds of my practice of Steps to Knowledge in my world has been such an inspiring and fulfilling experience for me that I wish to continue. I am so happy with this partnership.

I have the feeling that Douglas is happy with our partnership too.  I hope it is fulfilling his vision of uniting the world in order to successfully emerge into the Greater Community. I hope it is fulfilling his vision of having posts in other languages.

I have a deep yearning to reclaim Knowledge, I have a deep yearning to learn the Truth, I have a deep yearning to return to my Source. I have a deep yearning to play my small part in the whole, to make my contribution. I feel that sowing the seeds of my practice of Steps to Knowledge in my world in 2013 has helped me to satisfy this yearning, but it is only the beginning.

In 2014, I wish to continue this journey with ongoing dedication and perseverance, for it is the journey of a lifetime, and as long as I am alive in this world I am committed to continuing my climb up the mountain.

What Happens If I Fail At My Mission?

I’m thinking that if someone has been reading carefully, they might be thinking the following: “Douglas, you have described the New Message from God practice of observation without judgment.  You have argued that the New Message from God practice of observation without judgment is a confirmation of the teaching of Jesus in the Sermon on the Mount.  But then you turn around and reject the New Age belief that everyone is where they need to be in terms of their awareness and development.  Surely there is a judgment for a person not being where they need to be, not living the life they were meant to live!  If you don’t believe in this judgment, then you want to have your cake and eat it too!  If you don’t believe in consequences for not living the life you were meant to live, then you’re working both sides of the street, buddy!”

What is my answer to this challenge?  My answer is “Ah, but we do believe in consequences for not living the life we were meant to live.”  We do believe in consequences for failing, for whatever reason, in one’s mission in life.  This particular answer comes from the book Greater Community Spirituality:

“There are no Heavens or Hells.  There is only work to be done, and there is only success or failure in this regard.  If you succeed, you advance and you progress. If you fail, you set yourself and your Spiritual Family back.  Failure is not always a matter of neglect.  Sometimes it is circumstantial.  In this, there is no blame. However, realizing the importance of achieving success in finding your purpose in life as it truly exists and not as you would have it be is a great accomplishment.  This guarantees a satisfaction and a sense of meaning that can never be found in any other way.”

What happens if I fail at my mission?  What happens if I fail, for whatever reason, to meet the people I came into the world to meet?  What happens if I fail, for whatever reason, to give the gifts I came into the world to give?  I set myself and my Spiritual Family back, and I have to try again.  Yes, this is sympathetic to certain teachings in Hinduism.

Did Adolf Hitler succeed in his mission in life?  I believe he did not.  What was Adolf Hitler’s mission in life?  I don’t know, but I don’t believe it was what he actually did.  What is Adolf Hitler doing now?  Trying again, or preparing to try again, like everyone else who failed, for whatever reason, at their mission in life.

I realize some people may find this line of thought to be unsatisfactory.  But I believe I have successfully answered the challenge that I’m having my cake and eating it too, or working both sides of the street.

A Beginner’s Mind Is Trickier Than It Looks

I consider it a significant accomplishment when someone develops a certain degree of expertise in any art or science, while retaining the attitude of a “beginner’s mind,” the felicitous combination of openness, enthusiasm, lack of preconceptions, and optimism which is the fuel of many accomplishments.  It takes a certain degree of humility.  Step 34 of Steps to Knowledge, “I am a beginning student of Knowledge,” encourages this beginner’s mind attitude.

I consider it a certain accomplishment to get to step 34.  Some significant thresholds have been crossed by students.  On the other hand, it’s only 9 per cent of the way in, which means no student is in any position to say “Ah, well, I can imagine what the rest will be like,” or “I’m clearly capable of this,” or “This is miles beyond me.”

The only downside of the beginner’s mind that I can see is that the beginner sees a wide range of possible outcomes and consequences for their actions, and maybe this wide range doesn’t really exist.  At this point, I wish to share a quotation from the book Greater Community Spirituality.

“Beginning students always think they are on the verge of accomplishment.  Intermediate students think they are on the verge of mastery.  Advanced students realize they are on the verge of simply learning the next step.”
