A Lesson In Stillness

In this post I wish to present a lesson in stillness.

When I pondered on how best to illustrate my practice of stillness, I recalled a scene from a Russian film based on Mikhail Bulgakov’s novel The Master and Margarita, one of my favorite books of all time and so superbly screened in this movie.

(This video is not the one I originally posted to go with the comments below, but it contains part of what I am referring to.)

Here I see Pontius Pilate entering into stillness. He lies on his couch and drifts away from reality, setting off with his dog, Banga, along the path of light cast by the moon. He meets Yeshua, whom he is surprised to see alive, since earlier that evening he had been told of his execution. Yeshua tells him that since he is walking along beside him, he is indeed alive and can talk to the procurator as long as he wants.

They talk of cowardice being the most terrible sin. Pilate admits his cowardice, but begs to be understood. “Have pity on me, philosopher! Do you, such an intelligent man, really think that the Procurator of Judaea would ruin his career for the sake of a man who had committed a crime against Caesar?” Yeshua just looks at him in response.

In this moment of stillness, in this encounter, Pontius Pilate recognizes the error of his ways, his cowardice, and says that although this morning he had not been ready to risk his career, now, in this moment of recognition (in stillness where all thing can be known–my comment), he would do anything to save this innocent dreamer, this miraculous healer, from execution.

‘You and I will always be together,’ says Yeshua. ‘ Where one of us goes, the other shall go too. Whenever people think of me, they will think of you.’

Pilate asks Yeshua to pray for him and is reassured by his nod in return.

This, I believe, is a good illustration of a lesson in stillness when all things can be known.

Stillness Is A Place of Knowing

Step 8. Today I Will Be Still and Step 9. In Stillness All Things Can Be Known first introduce the concept of stillness that continues to grow in significance as Steps proceed. These two Steps go hand-in-hand, Step 8 leading the way with a gentle nudge, telling me not to be discouraged if early attempts prove difficult. It suggests that I begin by focusing on an internal point, either imaginary or somewhere in the physical body.

When I did this Step and first attempted to enter stillness, I chose to focus on the place we call the Third Eye, looking inward from that spot and picturing an entire galaxy opening up inside my head, vast and quiet. There was light and some form I might call a Teacher. As I entered deeper into stillness, I would penetrate further into this galaxy of heavenly bodies, walking slowly along an illuminated path.

Stillness is a Place of Knowing

Step 9 takes up the baton from Step 8 and carries the physical practice of being still a step further to embrace what happens when the mind attains the capacity to be still.

It says:

Stillness of mind allows a greater mind to emerge and to reveal its wisdom. Those who cultivate stillness with a desire for Knowledge will be preparing themselves for greater revelation and true insight to emerge. The insight may emerge during practice or during any normal activity.

I recall being highly happy with the suggestion that insight might emerge during any normal activity. I wrote in my notes: I realized it is important for me to be able to practice stillness wherever I am and whatever I am doing, without making special preparations and being in what I consider the “right” place. In other words, I strive for stillness being my normal operative mode. Perhaps this is a tall order, but I am aware that insights do indeed emerge as I go about my normal activity.

I wish to show a graphic example of how stillness is a place of knowing in my next post.

Отбрасывать избитые истины требует, как минимум, мужества, а ещё хоть чуточку желания принимать новые идеи. Откровение, раскрытое Маршалу Виану Саммерсу в 2009 г. под названием «Новый Бог», как раз предлагает возможность это сделать.

Это откровение начинается со следующими словами:

Есть новое Откровение о Боге, вытесняющее Бога из контекста древней истории человечества, конфликтов, фантазий и неправильного понимания человека. Это Откровение помещает Бога в бóльшую панораму жизни во Вселенной – называемой Великим Сообществом.

Мне вспомнилась книга Тома Роббинса Тощие ноги и не только, которую я прочитала с огромным удовольствием несколько лет назад.

Помню, как некоторые идеи автора нашли у меня большой отклик. Например, он пишет:

«Ранние религии напоминали илистые пруды, в которых плавает листва. В их мутной глубине рыба плескалась себе и кормилась. Со временем, однако, религии уподобились аквариумам. Затем рыбопитомникам. А от малька в рыбопитомнике до замороженной рыбной палочки в холодильнике всего один шаг, вернее, заплыв.

Безусловно, у религии тотчас отыщутся защитники, которые укажут на то, какое утешение она дарит больным, слабым духом, разочаровавшимся в жизни. Что ж, согласимся. Но Всевышний не обязан заниматься одними страждущими, Он спешит отбрасывать избитые истины! (добавление в курсиве мое) И если кто‑то желает узреть лик Божества, он должен разбить стенку аквариума, вырваться на свободу из рыбопитомника, попробовать, преодолевая коварные пороги, плыть против течения, нырять в глубокие фиорды. Нужно исследовать лабиринты рифов, темные, поросшие лилиями заводи. Как это ущербно, как оскорбительно – и для человека, и для самого Бога, – думать о нем как о добром стороже; видеть в нем некоего вечно отсутствующего хозяина рыбопитомника, который держит нас под замком «утешения» тесных искусственных водоемов, куда посредники время от времени сыплют нам тщательно дезинфицированные и прошедшие предварительную обработку хлопья духовной пищи.

Стремление к Божеству заложено в самой природе человека. … Поиск путей к Всевышнему облагораживает наши души и просветляет наши мозги. Возможно, что именно эти две вещи и есть конечная цель нашего бытия».

Отбрасывать избитые истины

Так вот, хотя идея Нового Бога может сбивать с толку, заставлять врасплох, пугать, даже ужасать, когда ты отбросишь избитые истины, то Новый Бог может оказаться как раз тем самим обширным и освобождающим понятием, которое ты когда-либо найдешь.

Оно открывает широкие просторы свободных вод, оно позволяет свободно двигаться и дает безграничные края для изыскания, оно открывает бóльшую панораму жизни, и освобождает от ограничений избитых истин, чтобы получить совершенный новый кругозор жизни.

Я рада сообщить, что я отбросила избитые истины. Я лично ничего нового не вижу в этом откровении о Новом Боге, Он всегда был тем Богом моего понимания, который существовал всегда. Поэтому слова к концу откровения проникли прямо в сердце:

Это Откровение от нового Бога – нового лишь для твоего понимания, ибо на самом деле есть лишь один Бог, и этот Бог древний или новый, но существовавший всегда.

Gratitude Is A Counterpoint For Disappointment

The Society for the New Message from God shared a message received by Marshall Vian Summers in January of 2009, a message on joy and gratitude. It is too long to quote, but I will share some of its ideas in shorter form.

Just arriving in this world is an accomplishment.

I am going to quote this paragraph, because it has an interesting phrase:

“Gratitude here is such a counterpoint for disappointment, for failed expectations and for the inability to express yourself successfully with others. It is such a counterpoint to all the things you think you want and need for yourself that you cannot seem to attain. It is a counterpoint to the endless busyness and recklessness with which people try to live their lives, always striving to have more, striving to keep what they have, striving to control their situation, striving to fulfill their desires or in some cases even to live out their fantasies.”

Here the word “counterpoint” is being used in the context “an alternate idea being brought up in contrast with the main idea.” But counterpoint also has the definition of “the art or technique of writing different melodies to flow together harmoniously, according to certain rules.” In my mind’s ear, I hear the melody of gratitude played alongside the melody of disappointment played by life.

This message is not nearly as blunt as Tecumseh was when he said “If you see no reason for giving thanks, the fault lies only in yourself,” but the idea that we live in a world full of wonders and happy moments is there.

Gratitude is a counterpoint for disappointment

We live in a world with a vast number of contributions made by other people who thought, at one time or another, “Maybe it would be nice if…” Somebody strung the wires, somebody dug the hole and put in the pipes, somebody built the roads, somebody developed the medicines, etc.

Give up driving a car for a year and then have the experience of driving a car.

Maybe we’re not ready to pay the price for the things we say we want. Maybe we’re not prepared to get what we say we want. Aren’t there many examples of people experiencing great stress and difficulty after winning the lottery? Don’t championship athletes routinely experience the hollowness of their success after years of effort?

People who are afraid of death, and whose hearts are full of the other fears that come from the fear of death, are robbed of the joy of living. “It is like you are dying a thousand times, dying every day for want of living.”

“If you do not think you are rich you should go somewhere where you would be rich and you will see why you are suffering over nothing.” In Zimbabwe, you would be rich.

“You have to limit how much bad news you let into your home through the media that keeps you in a state of frustration and aggravation.” I’m taking this piece of advice.

Our bodies and minds are remarkable vehicles. We are fearfully and wonderfully made. If you don’t like your vehicle, consider swapping with a dog, or a squid, or an ant.

“Ask yourself, ‘Do I want to focus on the one percent that is not working and miss the 99 percent that is working?'”

While all of the above are interim recommendations, the big answer is connecting with Knowledge, the deeper current, the Greater Power.

У меня огромная потребность в истинном Знании

Как только я начала проходить Шаги к Знанию, я почти тут же осознала, что у меня огромная потребность в истинном знании. Знание, в такой форме как оно представляет собой в этих Шагах, оглашается далеким, но ясным звоном по Древним Коридорам моего ума, пробуждая меня к тому, чтобы его принимать и восстановить, ибо оно является центром моего бытия и присутствия в этом мире.

Спешу уверять, однако, что это осознание не пришло одним разом, я продолжаю его потихоньку проникать. Тем не менее, уже занимаясь этими Шагами всего лишь неделю (я прошла этот шаг 10 ноября 2012), я знала вне всякого сомнения, что моя потребность в истинном знании огромная.

Шаг 7 представляет собой обзор первых шести шагов, предлагая рассматривать каждый шаг в отдельности, а также обдумывать всю последовательность этих шагов в целом. Во время этого обзора не надо приходить к выводам, но оно требует, чтобы я осознала настолько я нуждаюсь в истинном знании.

Занимаясь этим шагом, я не только рассматривала проделанные шаги, а ещё сделала ретроспективный анализ своей жизни до настоящего момента, раздумывая серьезно над тем, что на самом деле толкает меня к действию.

Мои записки к этому обзору гласят: размышляя о своей жизни до настоящего времени, я поняла, что не с помощью анализа и выработки условных рефлексов я оказалась в той ситуации, где я нахожусь сегодня, а через внутреннее чувство, как будто меня вело какое-то более глубокое чутьё, что-то непостижимое. Если бы я действовала по велениям аналитического ума, я бы здесь в России не оказалась сегодня, ведь решение не из разумных.

Я могу говорить, что я хотела делать то, что сделала, потому что я думала, что принимаю правильное решение, но может быть на самом деле, у меня была потребность поступить таким образом, потому что неведомо следила за подсказками Знания. Иначе говоря, если ставлю «у меня есть потребность» на место «у меня есть желание», то картина кардинально меняется. А теперь я думаю, что, пожалуй, это было Знание, которое привело меня сюда, а не мои личные желания и предпочтения.

У меня огромная потребность в истинном знании. Это для меня очевидно, это само собой разумеется. И именно этой огромной потребностью в истинном знании является тот стимул, который пробуждает меня продолжать свой путь.

Listening Is Being Present

In Step 62 of Steps to Knowledge “Today I will learn to listen to life,” we are told that whatever we are present with is what we will be able to hear.

Nightingale, hovering high
Harmonize the wind
Darkness, your symphony
I can hear you sing
Of voices in the sky

Listening is being present

There have been a number of previous steps that address the subject of looking without judging. This step expands upon that idea to include being present and listening without judging.

Just what is happening to me?
I lie awake with the sound of the sea
Calling to me

The practice of the step is an hourly practice, taking a moment to listen to one’s outer world and one’s inner world. I don’t have to close my eyes and go into a lotus posture, just listen.

Tell me what you sing
Though your voice be faint
I am listening
Voices in the sky

Listening is being present. Being present is not judging. Listening is being present is not judging. If you are judging people, you have no time to listen to them. If you are judging people, you have no time to be present to them. Give the gift of your presence, so that you will receive the gift of the presence of others.

The bell’s about to ring
Voices in the sky

I heard the melodious voice of Justin Heyward, and the song “Voices in the Sky” by The Moody Blues in my inner ear as I contemplated this post. The performance was on the British television program Colour Me Pop in 1968.

Stepping Out Of Your Comfort Zone

Stepping out of your comfort zone takes courage and a certain amount of willingness to embrace new ideas. And this is precisely what the Free School of the New Message from God is offering in its current November/December session with the opportunity to contemplate The New God, a revelation received by Marshall Vian Summers in 2009.

It begins with:

There is a New Revelation about God, a Revelation that takes God out of the ancient history of humanity, out of the conflicts and the fantasies and the misunderstandings of humanity. This Revelation takes God into the larger panorama of life in the universe called the Greater Community.

This brought to mind a book by Tom Robbins called Skinny Legs and All that I read a few years ago and thoroughly enjoyed.

I recall finding particular affiliation with some of the author’s ideas. For instance, he writes:

“Of course, religion’s omnipresent defenders are swift to point out the comfort it provides for the sick, the weary, and the disappointed. Yes, true enough. But the Deity does not dawdle in the comfort zone! If one yearns to see the face of the Divine, one must break out of the aquarium, escape the fish farm, to go swim up wild cataracts, dive in deep fjords. One must explore the labyrinth of the reef, the shadows of lily pads.

“A longing for the Divine is intrinsic in Homo sapiens. … We approach the Divine by enlarging our souls and lighting up our brains. To expedite those two things may be the mission of our existence.”

Stepping Out of Your Comfort Zone

This resonated with me. So what I am trying to point out here is that while the idea of a New God may seem baffling, even outrageous and frightening to some, when contemplated from a vantage point out of your comfort zone, it just may be the most expansive and freeing concept you will find.

It opens up wide vistas of clear water, it provides free movement and vast expanses for exploration, it reveals a larger panorama of life, and it allows escape from the restrictions of the comfort zone to embrace a whole new perspective on life.

I am happy to tell you that I have stepped out of my comfort zone. I personally find nothing new in this New God at all, it is the God I always knew was there, the God that has always been. So the words toward the end of the revelation spoke straight to my heart:

This has come from the new God—new only to your understanding, for there is only one God and that God is neither new nor old, but has always been.

Big Ongoing Disruptions

Out of all the phrases, or analogies, or metaphors that the New Message from God could have used to describe what humanity faces in the times ahead, it used the phrase “Great Waves of Change.” I have pondered on why this is so.

Where do waves come from? I have been told they come from winds (tsunamis being a notable exception). Where do winds come from? I have been told they come from differences in barometric pressure. Where do differences in barometric pressure come from? I have been told they come from mechanical sources (masses of air bumping into each other) and thermal sources (masses of air being cooled by other masses of air). I could go on, but I believe you get the idea that waves are the end point of a series of forces. Furthermore, some of the forces exerted their influence at a significant distance from where the wave broke upon the shore.

Big ongoing disruptions

And so it is with the great waves of change. Just as the waves are an ongoing phenomenon, the waves of change are an ongoing phenomenon. Just as the waves are the end points of series of forces, the waves of change are also the end points of a series of forces. The difference is that the waves of change are the end points of a series of forces of change set in motion by humanity’s choices.

Why do I use the word “disruptions” to describe the connotation of the rather neutral word “change?” Because the changes involved are mentioned in the second paragraph of the first chapter:

“For you are now living in a world of declining resources, a world whose climate has been seriously affected, a world whose ecological condition is deteriorating, a world where humanity will have to face the prospects of great shortages of food and water and the risks of disease and illness on a very large scale, even affecting the wealthy nations of the world.”

I say, and I say it again; right or wrong, true or false, they mean it. If you don’t like the phrase “Great Waves of Change,” you can use “big ongoing disruptions.” Either way, difficult times are ahead.

Judgment Departs, Love Remains

Once upon a time, I heard a Christian preacher make the following argument: 1) Everyone who believes that Jesus is the Christ is born of God (1 John 5:1, NIV), 2) God is love (1 John 4:8, NIV), 3) Love is patient, kind, and numerous other desirable qualities (1 Corinthians 13), 4) Therefore, it is consistent for a Christian to affirm or confess that they possess the desirable qualities of 1 Corinthians 13, since they are born of the source of those qualities.

Steps to Knowledge expands upon statement 1). We were told back in Step 24, “I am worthy of God’s love,” that at the very core of ourselves, we are God’s love:

“You are indeed worthy of God’s love. In fact, you really are God’s love. Without pretense of any kind, at the very core of yourself, this is your True Self. It is not the Self you yet experience, and until you do experience it, do not pretend that this is your experience. But hold in true awareness that this is your Self. You are a person, but you are greater than a person. How can you be unworthy of God’s love if that is what you are?”

It’s not just people who believe certain things that are born of God; people are born of God. It takes some effort to reclaim one’s birthright.

Judgment departs, love remains

Step 61, “Love gives of itself through me,” follows from Step 60, “I will not judge the world today,” in my opinion. The point is not to make an explicit effort to be loving, but to open to love’s expressing itself. The Step didn’t say this, but I got the idea that love could express itself more freely in the absence of judgment.

As I pondered this Step, I saw a picture in my mind’s eye. In this picture, the pronouns in the Bene Gesserit Litany Against Fear were replaced with the word “Love,” and the word “fear” was replaced with the word “judgment.” It made the last three lines like this.

Love will permit judgment to pass over love and through love
And when judgment has gone past, love will turn the inner eye to see judgment’s path
Where the judgment has gone there will be nothing…Only love will remain.

Judgment departs, love remains. Try it on and see how it feels.

Мне думается, что люди, занимающие Шагами к Знанию, будут получать больше удовольствия от своих стараний, если они допускают, что есть вещи, выходящие за пределы понимания.

Когда до тебя дойдет, что твоя жизнь до настоящего момента построена на очень хрупким фундаменте и в основном состоится из твоих предположений и предпочтений, а не основана на познаваемой реальности, то скорее всего захочешь бросать всё к всем чертам и быстро убраться.

Про себя, однако, могу подтвердить, что такого не было. Я решила остаться на месте и пытаться дальше пробить суть того, что эти Шаги мне предлагают. Более того, я допускала, что имею очень поверхностное понимание всего этого. Я даже дошла до мысли, что вообще ничего не понимаю, и лучше помолчать.

Тем не менее, я решила не вешать нос, а размышлять дальше о том, что на самом деле может быть моим истинным фундаментом. Меня особенно утешила фраза в Шаге 6 о том, что «этот фундамент основан на твоей жизни за пределами этого мира, ибо ты оттуда пришел и туда будешь возвращаться».

Почему именно эта фраза утешила? Потому что она подтвердила одну из моих заветных и давних мыслей—я откуда-то пришла в этот мир и туда вернусь, когда уйду. А теперь в меня ещё вселяется уверенность в том что, там находится мой истинный фундамент. Скажу больше – мой истинный фундамент находится в Боге. Он находится в той части себя, которая не принадлежит моему физическому телу, моим мыслям и идеям, моим верованиям и надеждам, желаниям и предпочтениям, а в той части себя, выходящей за пределы понимания.

Так, мой истинный фундамент – понятие, выходящее за пределы моего понимания, но я очень в нем нуждаюсь. Поэтому я следую рекомендациям и размышляю над этим вопросом с искренностью и глубоким проникновением. Я допускаю, что без этого фундамента, всякое продвижение будет безнадежным. И принимаю этот фундамент, как великое превосходство, даже если оно выходит за пределы понимания.
